Future work

  • explore the idea of a private member’s bill proposing the simple changes set out above. Opponents would have to state why they thought such an apparently innocuous proposal unacceptable.
  • find a lawyer who could ask how important Article 10 really is to corporations and whether, for example, the claim by the tobacco companies that their human rights to commercial freedom of speech would be violated by a ban on advertising was mere rhetoric or had legal substance.
  • Ask how advertising and lobbying can legitimately be claimed as freedom of expression; whose expression is it? Should limits be imposed on it? What might these consist of?
